Hey I really like this, and wow, so many people in their lives are led by one evil thought of another, and everyday more and more, and not realizing that we are not called to be this, we need to be ourselves, or new selves that Christ has given, and made us through our faith in him, and his spirit in our lives. Wow Brian this is so huge, the only way we can not have these thoughts is, Yielding to the POWER THAT IS ALREADY WORKING IN OURSELVES AND RELY ON HIS STRENGTH THAT HE GIVES US!!!!!!!!!!! Then we will truely be renewed, because through the power in us, there is no stronghold in our life that cannot be broken!! AMEN WHAT A AMAZING LIFE WE HAVE BEEN SHOWN and have the power to live out!!

First off...I most certainly love your front page view of the lovely harvest moon~The November Harvest Moon....the most Beautiful. <3

And Brian....as for these phrases written of the self-righteous...catching themselves dead center within the cross-walk, when the red light said "don't go"...well, interestingly enough I find this a truse of expression for some, and almost has become for me a feeling in wanting to puke as of lately--these pharises of not-much in the long run...... These so called prolific blogger's of religion who can't seem to find the time to correct their bad behaviors~trespassing by way of abruptness~with not much poise attached to their misdemenaor of bad gestures at times many posts written....well, I look at it like this...If they can't go face to face with their peers before others--without the need to continue to ramble themsleves into the intersection of caotic blise hypocrisy....well, I just cast aside the indifferences as of today in hoping they somehow become re-trained within thier minds all together again.....
A human being knows by their own self consciousnesses~if they've fallen at the wayside in *selfish endeavors of self-rightousnesses heading no where....eventually only fooling themselves, and no one else. Good Post!
.....and thanks for sharing....Happy Thanksgiving ~ Rahab

My compassion, understanding, and patience all suffer major setbacks when I'm stressed. Or really tired. Or hormonal (that's not an excuse men can use I guess.) What's the cure? Less stress? I do try not to overburden my life, but sometimes it just happens. I am trying to go to bed earlier to prevent tiredness. I am doing some stuff with nutrition and supplements to tackle the hormone thing.

Yeah, I know, I should pray about it too. But that area of my life has suffered a major setback recently, too, due to that disruptive season, summer, when for some reason my whole walk with God tends to slip back a few paces.

I just keep trying, that's all I can do. I thank God that at least I have become self-aware enough to discern the causes of my lapses in the fruits of the spirit. With His help, maybe I'll be able to eliminate them; compared to the past, they are very greatly reduced.

That's a jump ahead of the real next question isn't it? The next question is really whether there are possible explanations of existence which also account for revelation at all, whether or not the revelation is true. If I am understanding what Mapson above is saying he (she?) proposes an explanation in which revelation is the result of people deluding themselves about the contact they get from a sleeping God? On the one hand, why doesn't this explain revelation? On the other why might revelations seem so specific (though not limited by faith) if God is unconscious?

Those are the next questions--not the scope of Flew's book, as he is still ambivalent a bit about whether God has revealed Himself--and in regards to other claims to revelation, that is a whole different discussion about how to evaluate whether a claim to revelation is true.

Why isn't the next question whether God has revealed himself, and if so what do we make of Mohammad? Or, what do we make of the Buddha? Or, what do we make of Joseph Smith? Or, what do we make of David Koresh? Are those revelations of God? Your arguments are as like to make Muslims and Mormons and Branch Davidians of people as any other faith.

If you liked that, I know of a book that has some similar points. It's called "A Year of Living Biblically" by AJ Jacobs. It's kind of a comedic look at how life would be if we actually followed all the rules in the Bible.

I think Flew (and the rest of the world!!) is moving more in the direction of pandeism, a philosophical position that explains the existence of the Universe via a deistic model, and equally explains phenomena such as the revelations and miracles common to all faiths through a pantheistic model. In short, "God" (what deists and pandeists call "the Deus") became the Universe, and no longer exists but as the underlying force of the Universe itself; and yet people believe they are experiencing revelations or miracles because they experience brief moments of touching the sleeping mind of the Deus, and it is so powerful a thing that they are unable to realize that it has not intentionally communicated with them.

Is this your blog? LOVE it! I will think about what you said when I see the movie. Haven't seen it yet, but love your insight. I think typically we all identify with the hero or heroine, if we are completely honest,(not looking at it from the messianic perspective.)

Hi Brian,

Stumbled upon your blog today and found your article about preaching very interesting. I have been preaching for over 30 years and have to say 'amen' to your ideas about preaching. In fact I now teach a course on preaching called, Preach With Power, and I teach some of the things you mentioned in the article.
